‘Mobilising a mini army’: How The Garden evolved the medical access doc for streaming with new series Critical: Between Life and Death

John Hay and Nicola Brown talk to Broadcast about The Garden’s purple patch of blue-light factual series.

In 2011, The Garden revolutionised the UK access doc with its groundbreaking series 24 Hours in A&E. The series remains one of Channel 4’s most dependable shows and was swiftly joined by its police-focused sibling 24 Hours in Police Custody in 2014.

Now, the ITV Studios label aims to evolve the access doc with Netflix original Critical: Between Life and Death. With its launch on 23 July, it marks the first UK medical access series to land on the streamer.

More than 2,600 staff across The London Major Trauma System consented to take part in the series, The Garden creative director Nicola Brown reveals, with the main shoot taking place over 21 days.

Brown says the filming operation was akin to "mobilising a mini army", with a production crew of approximately 100 people working across an intense and fast-changing environment.
